Family Portrait Tips: How to Plan and Prepare for Your Session in Palm Beach Gardens
At Vasi Studio, I create timeless family portraits that capture your family's story and legacy. A little planning before your session makes everything feel easy and natural, so you can simply enjoy being together. Here are the questions I ask every family and my favorite tips to prepare.
Start With Your Story
Before we photograph, I like to understand why this moment matters to you. I usually ask:
What is the occasion? An engagement, a new baby on the way, a graduation, a family reunion, the holidays, or simply wanting beautiful portraits of your family as it is today.
Who will be in the portrait? Grandparents, siblings, children, and of course pets are always welcome.
Where will you display your portrait? Knowing the wall and room helps us choose the right orientation, size, and style for wall art, canvases, or an heirloom album.
Choose Your Setting
In the Studio
A studio session creates a classic, elegant portrait with beautiful light and a choice of backgrounds, from simple and timeless to rustic and artistic.
In Your Home
An in-home session is more relaxed and storytelling, showing your family in the place you love and the beauty of your home.
On Location
A park, a beach, or another meaningful place around Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter, and Palm Beach creates natural, airy portraits. Outdoor sessions are always weather permitting, and I plan a backup date just in case.
What to Wear: Color Harmony
Coordinated outfits make a family portrait look polished and timeless. There are two approaches I love:
Traditional: everyone dresses very similarly, for a classic, unified look.
Modern: the same color palette, but each person wears something a little different, or the boys and girls coordinate separately.
Avoid busy prints, stripes, lines, and logos so the focus stays on your faces. In South Florida, light and breathable fabrics in soft neutrals, whites, blues, and earth tones photograph beautifully. I would love to help you choose outfits before your session.
How to Prepare
Women: have your hair, makeup, and nails done.
Men: schedule your haircut two days before the session.
Kids: make sure they feel well and have had their nap, and bring a few of their favorite snacks.
Pets: groom them a few days before, and bring a leash, treats, and a favorite toy.
After Your Session
We choose your favorite images together, and I finish them by hand so they still look like you. Then we can design canvases, wall art, or an heirloom album to enjoy in your home for generations.
Family Portrait Q&A
Can we include grandparents and pets?
Yes. Multi-generation portraits and families with pets are some of my favorite sessions.
Should we be photographed in the studio or outdoors?
Choose the studio for a classic, elegant look, your home for a relaxed storytelling feel, or a beach or park for natural light. We can talk through what fits your family best.
Do we all need to match?
No. Coordinating in the same color palette usually looks more modern and natural than matching exactly.
What if my children are having a hard day?
That is completely normal. Schedule around naps, bring snacks, and leave the rest to me. I keep sessions relaxed and patient.
