Pet Portrait Tips: How to Prepare Your Dog or Cat for a Photo Session

Your pets are family, and an artistic pet portrait celebrates their personality and the bond you share. Dogs, cats, puppies, and even birds, bunnies, and other exotic pets are welcome in my Palm Beach Gardens studio or on location. A little preparation helps your pet feel calm and happy, so we can capture their true character.

Before the Session

  • Exercise first: a good walk or play time before the session helps release extra excitement.

  • Don't overfeed: a lighter meal beforehand keeps your pet interested in treats during the session.

  • Rest: make sure your pet is well rested.

  • Grooming: groom and bathe your pet a few days before, so their coat looks its best and settles naturally.

  • Outfits: if you plan to dress your pet, try the clothing on beforehand to be sure it fits and they are comfortable.

Tell Me About Your Pet

Every pet is different, and the more I know, the better the portraits. Please let me know:

  • Any special tricks or habits you would love to capture

  • Any dietary needs, allergies, or medical concerns

  • If your pet is shy or not comfortable with new people, so we can plan a calm, patient session

What to Bring

  • Favorite or high-value treats

  • Two or three favorite toys, especially squeaky ones

  • Outfits, bandanas, or jewelry, if you would like to use them

  • Leash, collar, and/or harness

  • Training clicker, if your pet uses one

  • Waste bags

  • An updated vaccine record

  • A positive, energetic attitude!

Join Your Pet in the Portraits

Be ready, just in case you decide to step into a few photos. People-and-pet portraits are some of the most treasured images. For the best look:

  • Women: plain colors, long sleeves, and nails done.

  • Men: schedule a haircut a few days before the session.

From Portrait to Fine Art

After the session, we choose your favorites together. Your pet's portrait can become canvas wall art, a grouping or series for your home, or a one-of-a-kind fine art piece designed around your pet's story.

Pet Portrait Q&A

What kinds of pets do you photograph?

Dogs and cats most often, plus puppies, birds such as parrots, bunnies, bearded dragons, horses, and other animals. Just ask.

What if my dog is very energetic?

That is perfectly fine. Exercise before the session helps, and I work patiently with treats, toys, and short breaks.

Can I be in the photos with my pet?

Yes. Many clients love portraits together with their pets. Come ready with a simple outfit, and we will include a few.

Where do pet sessions take place?

In my Palm Beach Gardens studio, at your home, or at a beach or park location around South Florida.
