Holiday Pet Portraits: How to Get Your Dog Ready for Christmas Photos

Every December my studio is full of wagging tails, little bells and Santa hats. Holiday pet portraits are some of my favorite sessions of the whole year. Pets are family, so of course they belong in the holiday photos too. Here is how I help my clients get their dog ready, so the session is calm, happy and fun for everyone.

Book Early

Holiday dates fill up fast, especially evenings and weekends. I always recommend booking at least two months before the holiday. This also gives you time to plan grooming, outfits and the background you love.

Plan the Grooming

Schedule grooming a few days before your session, not the same morning. The coat looks soft and natural after a day or two, and your dog is relaxed again. Ask your groomer for a nice clean face and paws, because those details show in a portrait.

Exercise, Then Rest

  • Take your dog for a good walk or play time before the session. A little tired dog is a happy, calm model.

  • Feed a lighter meal that day, so treats are still exciting.

  • Let them rest a bit before you come, so they are not too wild and not too sleepy.

What to Bring

  • Favorite or high-value treats, the smellier the better.

  • One or two favorite toys, especially squeaky ones.

  • Leash, collar or harness, and waste bags.

  • A holiday outfit, bandana or sweater if your dog already likes wearing it.

No outfit? No problem. I keep a little treasure box of holiday scarves and hats in different sizes, so every pet can have a festive look.

Try the Outfit at Home First

If you plan to dress your dog, try the outfit a few times at home before the session. Some dogs love it, some need a few minutes, and some prefer just a simple red bow. We always go with what makes your dog comfortable.

Choose Your Holiday Set

My Palm Beach Gardens studio has many holiday backgrounds: a cozy Christmas fireplace, snowy winter scenes, rustic doors dressed for the season and a Hanukkah setting. Many clients pick two or three backgrounds in one session. The studio is quiet and calm, which is perfect for pets who get distracted outside.

Join Your Dog in a Few Photos

Some of the most treasured holiday portraits are people and pets together. Wear simple solid colors that match the holiday look, like deep red, cream, navy or forest green, and you are ready to step in for a few frames.

Cats, Puppies and Seniors Are Welcome Too

Holiday portraits are not only for dogs. I photograph cats, puppies, senior pets and other animals too. Every session moves at your pet's pace, with patience, treats and short breaks.

From Portrait to Gift

A holiday pet portrait makes a beautiful gift for the family: a canvas for the wall, a mounted print, or a one-of-a-kind fine art piece. Portrait gift certificates are also a lovely present for the pet lovers in your life.
